Film: On The Road

A seminal piece of writing makes its way to the silver screen this year, as Walter Salles’ re-imagining of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road promises to inspire, entertain and engross audiences with its evocative imagery and compelling portrayal of the legendary characters. Incu takes a look at the fashion that defined a generation and gives you the chance to win double passes to the movie - In cinemas September 27th.

On the Road is the story of a fierce and defining search for meaning during a time in American history when difference was frowned upon and outsiders were suspect.  The two main characters Sal Paradise (who Kerouac based closely on his own experiences) and the free spirited Dean Moriarty embark on a journey filled with jazz, liquor, sex and self discovery.

When any much loved literary work is adapted for film, the announcement of this news brings with it both excitement and expectation. Fans long to see the characters whom they know so intimately between the pages awakened on film but often hope that the essence of the story isn’t lost in translation. In On the Road Salles not only affords the care and attention required to translate such poignant prose but visually enlightens the images conjured through Kerouac’s original words.

One of the most telling visual cues in the film is the fashion. Simple, classic well made, versatile. The clothing here represents not only the hedonistic nature of the characters but also provides a snapshot into the late 40’s; a time where the younger generation searched for meaning and individuality in a conservative America.
