Hi Amy, how are you?
I’m really well! Functioning on very little sleep- but well.
Where are you at the moment?
I’m in my studio packing up orders for the new summer range that is about to hit stores.
What have you been working on?
I have been busy finishing production and more excitingly, designing AW13!
Tell us a little bit about this seasons collection.
This collection is called ‘A Stranger in A Strange Land’. I named it after the 1960s cult novel written by Robert Heinlein. The collection is inspired by 1969 Santa Fe (New Mexico) with the cuts, colours and prints all tying back to this theme.
Who / what was on your mood board this season?
My mood board was eclectic to say the least! It contained images of religious cult gatherings from the 1960s; desert scenes; all things “Americana”; Jim Morrison; and vintage New Mexico motels.
Have you always had the same girl in mind when designing the collection or do you find that she’s evolved over time?
The Amy Kaehne girl has remained constant. At the core, she is relaxed and uncomplicated
What do you spend your time doing outside of fashion? You must love literature to have named the collection after a Heinlein novel?
Yes, my husband and I collect first edition American literature from the 1950s/60s. We are inspired by authors like Kerouac, Bukowski, Robbins, Burroughs and Fante that spoke about seeking change in society.
I especially love ones published by Black Sparrow Press as they produced such beautiful cover art along with publishing the some of the best authors.
Your favourite book?
It is so hard to pick a favourite but either Ham on Rye by Charles Bukowski or On The Road by Jack Kerouac.
Do you have any exciting trips coming up?
Yes! I have a big trip planned in October where I will be visiting Bangkok, London, Paris, Barcelona, LA, and Peutro Vallarta (Mexico). We try and go on an overseas trip every year. It keeps me inspired and relaxed.
Where do you see the label heading in the future?
I am really focused on building my international awareness & being involved in fun & creative collaborations with creatively minded people.
